Ancient Egyptian Race [05 Jan 2012|02:14pm]
This has been a pet peeve of mine for some time now. And it's that people seem to be misunderstanding who and what ancient Egyptians were. Several times I've seen people blurt out idiotic comments, ie: "they're supposed to be black people, lol" or some cases where even a roleplay community defended that Egyptian Gods can't be played by "lily white" people -- I'm not even going to go into the screaming racism of the second comment, and I shouldn't, because I find that the majority of people can't seem to grasp my explanation of skin melanin. But as the friend of an Egyptian, and as a scientist, I find all of this ridiculously offensive. It doesn't help that those who are earnestly attempting to gain a little truth on this topic find this page, which, while having the intent of being unbiased, is actually rife with black-african political apologies. Nor does it help that mainstream science shows like National Geographic like to put spins on discoveries to make them interesting (such as the "Black Cleopatra" coverage). I'm not a racist, but I want to clear the air about who Ancient Egyptians were. And I'm going to defend my statements as a scientist.

But I do want to begin with the easiest argument to understand. If you've ever met an Egyptian, a very typical Egyptian, like I have, you'd know that they are clearly not black. A modern Egyptian never refers to themselves as African; they just refer to themselves as Egyptian. This kind of specificity distinguishes the populations' own outlook on their identity. And if you've ever seen President Mubarak, he's neither typically Caucasian nor typically Negroid, but he is very very pale. I mention him as an example because a country's leader is almost always representative of its people. This is a very tangible point which I think everyone can wrap their head around and understand. The deeper thinkers are going to argue about Egypt's history of occupation and colonization. So here's where I'll go into the science. )

Romulus, My Father [30 Dec 2011|09:44pm]
Title: Missing
Fandom: Romulus, My Father
Rating: PG13ish
Spoilers: the whole movie, sorry D8
Characters: Romulus
Author's Notes: Yep. Going back to prompt writing. Also realizing that I'm becoming extremely minimalist and that I'm somehow avoiding metaphors more often. Could just be too many scientific papers on my part. I need to go back to my Jack Kerouac roots.

He loved his son. )

Solve This [09 Nov 2010|09:13pm]
Consider the probability of Rufus and Tseng sharing a swing as a discrete random variable with a negative binomial distribution. For each trial, the probability of Tseng letting Rufus have the swing is 0.5. Let it be that Rufus will continually beg until Tseng agrees. Let Y = the number of failures preceding the Rth success such that R is equal to 1. Find the probability that Rufus will make 5 unsuccessful wails before Tseng decides to share the swing. Hint: Find P(Y=5) with n=6.
